I think this may be in Ubuntu 10.10 demo mode? There is an Ubuntu 10.10 install icon on this desktop. Having problems with Ubuntu booting up regularly as the screen goes black when I select Ubuntu on the startup instead of Windows 7. After several attempts I pressed esc when the computer was loading and selected demo so it loaded.
If anyone can help with this mystery I appreciate it
Quack!
Quaxster. If your screen was going black, it may be because you wrote your disk at too high of a speed.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it does take a pretty good while on first boot so be patient.
Another potential problem is that you have a 64 bit machine and downloaded the 32 bit version or vice versa. Don't know if that would cause this issue but it's possible.
What software did you use to burn your image disk? Also, there should be a way to do a dual install from the Demo.
I didn't use a CD and did a direct download from Ubuntu. It seems the Ubuntu is on my computer. Perhaps I should try the CD method tonight if this still is problematic.
ReplyDeleteI believe that you need to burn your download to a disk as an ISO image. Directions here. http://uhohit566.blogspot.com/2011/02/open-road-to-ubuntu-challengegetubuntu.html
ReplyDeleteHey James Thanks for your blog outline. I burned the Ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386 onto a CD-R at work today and try again tonight. There are two versions for Ubuntu desktop and Ubuntu server. I chose the desktop version.
ReplyDeleteI think used Wubi installer last night, so I got that result.
Yes, you should definitely start with the desktop version. Did you use a software that could burn an Image? This is important because it needs to be able to boot.
ReplyDeleteYes it burned the image onto the CD. However now my computer has totally blanked out now and I have a blinking cursor. No os at all now.
ReplyDeleteQuack, it takes a while to work. If it does not load, you may have to burn the disk at a slower rate. I had to burn mine 3 times. Each at slower speeds. 1x was the charm. Again, what software are you using to burn your disk. I tried 2 different ones. The first one, i can't remember the name, did not work. I had success with IMG Burn. Download it here. http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-10847481.html
ReplyDeleteJust because you see a file named ISO on your disk does not mean it burned as an image.
ReplyDeleteThanks James I think it's working now, I did a regular burn utilizing CDBurnerXP, the speed didn't matter apparently as the lowest denominator was 10x. This HP laptop is new and recognized the recommended speed (which was 64 I think). However I had to use my work computer which is an older Windows XP to download the new burn software. I think I have Ubuntu now and now its time to figure out this server stuff.
